Tobias took the nine-degree angle as a starting point for Whitney Sans but also wanted to discover what would happen if he threw a variety of design influences into a pot and let it simmer. The result is a text face that feels fresh, energetic, and unassuming all at once. One of the ways he achieved this was by shortening and then eliminating the vertical stem in the question mark, an uncommon move for a text face.
Another way is by adding a unique cut to the middle stroke of the capital E and F, and the angled cut in only one of the top terminals of the capital T. These moves give the typeface a unique flavor and make it easier to read at smaller sizes.
Other notable features include a varying baseline, beautiful glyphs, and stunning alternates. The client had asked for something unusual in the design. Is Something that could serve as a recognizable signal of their brand. It can be tricky to thread that needle as gingerly as possible without adding some visual gimmick that ends up being more annoying than distinctive. Tobias took a page from typefaces like Syntax and Kabel. Which both stir up the baseline with angled terminals on some letters (like the capital E and F). He also added a unique cut to the middle stroke of the capital W.
Tobias threw all of these elements into a pot to see what would happen. The result was Whitney Sans, a family that has a lot going on but remains accessible at small sizes. It also works well in both Roman and italic, with a visually consistent interval between the weights. Tobias even went so far as to shorten and remove the vertical stem in the question mark.
